چکیده

A straight-line triangle representation (SLTR) of a planar graph is a straight-line drawing such that all the faces including the outer face are triangles. Such a drawing can be viewed as a tiling of a triangle with triangles where the input graph is the skeletal structure. A characterization based on flat angle assignments, i.e., selections of angles of the graph that are of size π in the representation, has been presented in earlier work. The drawback of this characterization of SLTRs is that we have no efficient algorithm for testing whether a given graph admits a flat angle assignment that fulfills the conditions. In this paper we present a new characterization based on Schnyder woods. For graphs with few Schnyder woods there exists a polynomial algorithm to check whether the conditions of this characterization are satisfied. However, there are planar 3-connected graphs on n vertices, which have 3.209 Schnyder woods. We also present a translation of the new characterization into a 2-commodity flow problem. Deciding whether a 2-commodity flow problem has an integral solution is known to be NPcomplete. Hence, it is still open to decide whether the recognition of graphs that admit a straight line triangle representation is polynomially tractable.

Another Characterization of Straight Line Triangle Representations

Toroidal maps : Schnyder woods, orthogonal surfaces and straight-line representations

A Schnyder wood is an orientation and coloring of the edges of a planar map satisfying a simple local property. We propose a generalization of Schnyder woods to graphs embedded on the torus with application to graph drawing. We prove several properties on this new object. Among all we prove that a graph embedded on the torus admits such a Schnyder wood if and only if it is an essentially 3conne...

Straight Line Triangle Representations

A straight line triangle representation (SLTR) of a planar graph is a straight line drawing such that all the faces including the outer face have triangular shape. Binary labelings for bipartite graphs

Part of the authors introduced in [C. Huemer, S. Kappes, A binary labelling for plane Laman graphs and quadrangulations, in Proceedings of the 22nd European Workshop on Computational Geometry 83–86, 2006] a binary labeling for the angles of plane quadrangulations, similar to Schnyder labelings of the angles of plane triangulations since in both cases the labelings are equivalent to tree decompo...

On the structure of Schnyder woods on orientable surfaces

We propose a simple generalization of Schnyder woods from the plane to maps on orientable surfaces of higher genus. This is done in the language of angle labelings. Generalizing results of De Fraysseix and Ossona de Mendez, and Felsner, we establish a correspondence between these labelings and orientations and characterize the set of orientations of a map that correspond to such a Schnyder wood...
